Ayahuasca is a hallucinogen 'tea' drunk
mainly in parts of Brazil and made from the bark of a vine
called Banisteriopsis caapi and a
psychoactive plant extract called Psychotria viridis.
Interestingly Banisteriopsis contains DMT (dimethyltryptamine)
which is ineffective in humans unless taken in conjunction
with a Mono Amino Oxidase Inhibiter (MAOI) such as that
found in Psychotria. Ayahuasca therefore contains two plant
extracts which are not particularly psychoactive or
hallucinogenic in isolation, but profoundly so when
combined.
